EarthLungs is restoring critical mangroves and promoting economic opportunity in Kenya.

It empowers coastal communities through fair work and wages by restoring mangrove ecosystems, crucial to employment, livelihood and nutrition.

Mangrove restoration is the process of revitalising and improving mangroves - coastal wetland habitats mainly found in tropical regions with unique trees and plants. Mangroves are crucial ecosystems for a variety of wildlife, stabilising, protecting coastlines from storms and erosion, and absorbing large quantities of carbon emissions to fight climate change.

The key objective of EarthLung’s Mangrove restoration project in Kenya is to uplift financially disadvantaged coastal communities by revitalising the mangrove forests aiming to ‘break the cycle of poverty’. Through the restoration of the biodiverse estuary, this initiative will not only establish new fishing grounds but also generate supplementary sources of income. Moreover, the rejuvenated forests will serve as a protective barrier against storm surges.

UN Project 9933 is helping rural families switch to safer, cleaner, more efficient cookstoves in Malawi.

Traditional three-stone cooking fires used in Malawi require huge amounts of wood leading to regional deforestation and huge emissions of greenhouse gases. Additionally, the burden of work associated with collecting wood to prepare the fire largely falls on the shoulders of women.

Switching to a Changu Changu Moto saves 2.5 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

Because of the wood-burning efficiency of improved cookstoves, women who switch to a changu changu motos save roughly 10 hours per week collecting firewood. Annually, this reduces wood consumption by an average of 100 bundles of wood per cookstove, or the equivalent of roughly 2.5 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Changu Changu Moto cookstoves provide a cleaner, more modern alternative to traditional three-stone fires, and reduce exposure to toxic smoke as well as the health risks associated with repeat exposure.

As women and children are usually in the home near cookstoves, they are most at risk for health issues associated with three-stone fires.

Therefore Changu Changu Motos directly benefit the health of women and children, and reduce risk of injury from open fire cooking.
